Marine Microbial Biotechnology International Workshop
23rd and 24th August 2001
Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh
A meeting organised jointly by;
European Society for Marine Biotechnology
Marine Bioprocess Engineering Network
Marine biotechnology can be described as the sustainable commercial exploitation of marine organisms for the benefit of mankind.Products include pharmaceuticals, enzymes, high value food ingredients/nutraceuticals, biopolymers and pigments. This international workshop will focus on the applications of marine microbes including cyanobacteria, microalgae, heterotrophic bacteria and fungi and will bring together international experts in the field to discuss recent advances in this important and emerging area. In addition, as well as the biological applications, advances in the chemical engineering aspects of marine bioprocesses will be covered.
Objectives of the Meeting
·To focus national and international attention on marine microbial biotechnology expertise within Scotland and in particular at Heriot-Watt University
·To strengthen international networking in the rapidly growing strategic area of marine biotechnology
·To establish a sustainable network to allow training and mobility of scientists and encourage cross-fertilisation of ideas from different disciplines, particularly at the life sciences / engineering interface
